AOC Is Now a Retail Expert
AOC is now an expert on retail.
Oh gee, won't wonders ever cease? Is there anything else that this woman can do? My god- next year at this time we'll be talking about her path to sainthood. It is amazing, incredible and downright wonderful how much this woman knows. Oh yes, I know, many of you are still under her spell. She has public relations down perfectly. If you take a moment to literally think, instead of letting Twitter shape your opinions maybe you'll finally see her for the phony that she is but I digress. If you're reading this blog, you know I'm no fan of AOC and no I'm not a...
centrist...
right-winger...
racist...
Trump lover...
misogynist...blah...blah...blah...
What I am is a Generation-Xer, Ralph Nader thinking democrat, absolutely disgusted that everything out of her mouth is taken as gospel. Recently, AOC was at a hearing where, according to the media she gave a brilliant take about private equity. While her points were commendable, let me tell you what she left out about retail.
The demise of retail didn't start with Amazon. It started with Walmart. At one time you could go to small town America and their surrounding areas you could finds stores like:
Sears...
Kmart...
Toys R Us...
Bon-Ton...
Payless...
Hills...
Ames...
Montgomery Ward...
Murphy's...
and I could go on and on. Sure, I'm missing stores but note, I'm talking about places in my area as a kid. What destroyed these? The rise of Walmart and people's instant love affair with their public relations slowly took down stores like Hills, Ames, Montgomery Ward and Murphy's. Amazon knocked down the rest. The impacts have been devastating. Many places are stuck with a Walmart with high prices and no choices on where to shop for groceries or basic house necessisities. What's my point in all of this?
Millenials, like AOC, love to throw out excuses and while her arguments about private equity have some merit they never like to wade into the complete reason why something failed. You don't hear that kids are more obsessed with electronics instead of toys. You never hear about the love affair that everyone has with Amazon. You never hear politicians like AOC just admitting the fact that we, as an entire society failed. Yes, corporations are crooked, greedy and whatever but a lot of people in America (including myself) could've fought against the allure of Amazon and Walmart instead of abandoning a lot of good stores but we failed. Are you shrugging and saying, big deal? Well, I'll tell you what...
Go ask your parents, grandparents or someone in Generation-X about Hills Department Stores. They'll be glad to tell you about the great clothes, holiday decorations, etc. Listen, learn and realize what you lost and that includes you too, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
