Newspapers

So, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is only publishing a print edition 3 days a week now.

Man that sucks.

Yeah, yeah- I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SAY...

'Digital is the way to go.'

'People want digital.'

'Digital is better.'

Blah-blah-blah.  I know, I know but I'll put up a great argument with the 'better' argument.  No, digital isn't better.  Now, don't get me wrong I'm sure there are many fine digital newspaper writers out there. (Socratic Gadfly comes to mind-gee how did that get there?)  But I digress- it's hot and I'm feeling a little smart-assy so let me continue.

As a whole I think the idea of digital newspapers all of the time is a BAD IDEA.  Why?  Well, for some reason- everyone has put Twitter as the center of the universe, so instead of indepth questions we get tweets.  We get anyone who disagrees with said tweet- getting slammed by the writer.  We get headlines that kind of run on the category of weak to downright biasness and my God FORGET INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALSIM.  That is dying out faster than the polar bears.  Want to know something really, really sad?

It didn't have to be this way.  We could've had the best of both worlds but thanks to only a few owning the ways of communication- all of us get screwed.  So, pals, that's why we have this idea out there that bubbleheads like Caitlin Johnstone are great journalists or hysterical gabbers like that Vos woman.  I mean it's just a sad thing to see and I think every single politician in Washington is giddy about the whole thing.

  1. From my day job, I agree. That said, a lot of these wounds are self-inflicted. The AP didn't charge Yahoo et al (long before Google) enough money to run an online version of the AP feet, and believed in a "TV model" that ads would pay the freight; this passed down to member newspapers, a large part of why they were so lazy about paywalls until the Great Recession. But, we're now 10 years later, and they're still lazy on paywalls. Like the about-to-shut Youngstown paper, which still has NONE. https://beloblogging.blogspot.com/2019/07/dont-blame-craigslist-etc-for.html
